Needles Parkway

After completing the wildlife loop in Custer Park, we drove down the scenic Needles Drive. By this time it was snowing and we were entering the higher elevations of the park. The snow added to the beauty and mystery of the moment, although it did impede our ability to appreciate the scenic overlook from the top of the mountains.

One of the most fascinating parts of the trip is having to drive your car through the one-lane tunnels which have been cut through several different sections of rock. Despite the snow and poor visibility I was fortunate to be able to capture several good shots of the tunnel. Of particular interest is the rock formation for which the drive was named – Needles Eye. This formation is aptly named, for if you view it from the side, it appears to be a very large ‘eye of a needle’! Although the drive is named for this famous formation, I personally had a deeper appreciation for many of the other, less famous rocks.
